White Out!
How to Wear White in Winter
As temperatures plummeted this week in Scotland, and snow flurried thick and fast (for a little while), I reached for the cosiest coat I own. Its creamy, winter white fur makes me look like a polar bear and being full-length, it feels like I’m wearing my duvet! In fact, Mr O and I sheltered inside it on our first, chilly New Year’s Eve together, when we took a bottle of Champagne down by the river to watch the fireworks in the snow. It really is like wearing a warm hug on a cold night!
White, however, can be a daunting colour for some. Unlike black that lets you blend in and remain in the shadows, white shouts out, attracts attention and demands careful maintenance. Yet for all that, it’s the epitome of chic, especially when layered up, tone on tone. White reflects light, and for that reason, I think it’s perfect on dark, winter days.
~ Style Notes ~
Like most monochromatic looks, whites are best combined in a variety of textures. In fact, this whole look is as much about texture-mixing as it is about wearing white. Here, I’ve teamed the signature piece - the full-length, deeply-textured teddy coat - with several contrasting textures.
The cable knit polo neck sweater is foiled by the soft, fluffy pom-poms of the scarf and the plastic, looping circles of the necklace. The ice-white denim breaks up the creaminess, while darker accents in my hair, gloves, belt, and in the pelt of my boots, draw the eye down the silhouette and add definition. Even my handbag adds another texture with the ruched leather in matching tonal palette.

For this look I have top-to-toe shopped my own wardrobe! In fact the coat is years old and I struggled to find anything as long. However, I have found lots of options, all at high street prices. I love all the pieces I’ve selected for you to recreate this ‘all-white-everything’ look, even if they vary a little from my own pieces. I was certainly tempted by a few of them!
