Part III: The Suit and Rock T-Shirt

In this, the final instalment of my ‘summer suit styling series’, I’m taking this oftentimes conservative tailoring and subverting its formality with a rock t-shirt (insert favourite band as desired) and funky, Stella McCartney Elise flatforms. Incidentally, if you missed Parts I and II you can catch up here and here.

New Normal = Casual Friday Every Day

Since more people than ever have been encouraged, enabled and even allowed to work from home for the first time, the long-term effects of this for ‘the office’ as we once knew it, will resonate far into the future. While many corporations had already embraced the flexibility and benefits of home working (I myself have worked from home since 2005, including 12 years in a corporate role), many had lacked the foresight. Now, having realised the potential savings (in terms of overheads and extra man-hours from grateful teams that no longer suffer lengthy commutes), even smaller firms are likely to reduce their office sizes, or perhaps offload them altogether, preferring instead to utilise co-working spaces, cafés and hotel facilities for meetings.

The last thing this newly nomadic tribe of colleagues will want is to be trussed up all day in a tight dress and high heels or in a fussy blouse that continually becomes untucked! Jumping on and off tube trains or hanging out in cafés between calls and meetings requires comfort and practicality. The trouser suit with flats and a t-shirt fits the bill perfectly.

Accessorise!

Don’t forget to add a personal touch to your look, even if you’re only going to work! Create an archive of interesting, statement accessories to dress up the simplest of outfits.

Tell me what you think - will your office still be there once the lockdown is lifted? Will you be wearing a more casual look to work in the future or will you still be expected to 'suit up’ in the traditional way? Let me know in the comments. For a more formal take on tailoring, check out this post.

In case you missed them, here is Part I and Part II, both also shot [pre-lockdown] by the talented Iain Gallagher.
