How to Style that Classic Carrie Bradshaw Look

When news broke that SATC was set to return, I’m sure I wasn’t the only super-fan who went straight back through every episode of the 6-season show for the umpteenth time! It never fails to inspire me - giving me new styling ideas for my old favourites, or even helping me understand relationships past… What a show! And to think we’re going to find out what happens next to these beloved characters, who many of us have grown up with! It fills me with such joy and anticipation I’m already vibrating with excitement!

There’s no denying it: much of the show’s success owes itself to the fabulous, groundbreaking styling of the preeminent Patricia Field. Her use of memorable, unexpected combinations and signature motifs - such as the Manolos, the tulle skirts and the oversized floral shoulder adornments - created a look for Carrie that was at once quirky, yet sophisticated, bohemian, yet refined, sexy, yet utterly singular and individualistic.

And of course, it wasn’t just Carrie’s look - Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte’s characters’ stories were told with similarly compelling veracity through their distinct styles. From Miranda’s power suiting and Samantha’s sexy skintight dresses, to Charlotte’s waspish twin sets and pearls, each girl had such a different fashion trademark that, to this day, you could literally label an outfit as ‘very Carrie’ or ‘totally Samantha’, and a fellow fan would know exactly what you meant.

I’ve said it before, so at the risk of repeating myself… for me, fashion is about fun and fantasy, colour and creativity, self-expression and yes, even sanity! Having endured close to a year of lockdown, hanging at home, in our sweats and comfy loungewear, could there be any better antidote to all that than the return of Carrie and the girls? It’s the other shot in the arm we’ve all be waiting for!
