Forget Me Not

Be unforgettable

In the age of the working woman, it’s more important than ever to cultivate a style that will make you memorable in the mind of your boss, your peers and your industry network.

"You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it." - Edith Head

In today’s hyper-visual world, where trends spread like wildfire and the lead time from runway to retail to utterly ubiquitous shrinks ever shorter, it’s not enough to merely select quality clothes that suit your style, body and personality.  You need a unique style that people won't forget.

Every day we see a riot of sameness in our offices, across the high street and our social media feeds.  Thanks to the power of the ‘filter bubble’, it's now more important than ever to be remembered.

Now you might be thinking that all this sounds a bit shallow, that you can’t judge a book by its cover, or that what you do and say is far more valuable at work than what you wear.

Well, I challenge that!

Of course doing your job exceptionally well, going the extra mile, networking throughout your industry is essential to success, but so too is that crucial first impression – made in 7 seconds.

And what about your lasting impression?

"Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered." —Giorgio Armani

We are all innately visual beings.  Contrary to the quote above from the great Armani, the psychological principle known as The Isolation Effect suggests that when something “sticks out like a sore thumb” it is much more likely to be remembered.  So why should we think of ourselves and our clothes as any different?  Of course I’m not advocating denim hot pants in the boardroom or anything inappropriate, just an eye-catching look, a style that’s uniquely you, a memorable and tailor-made personal brand.

Here are 3 ways to cultivate your own unforgettable look:

1. Colour

Adopting interesting colours is one of the best ways to be memorable.  You don't have to wear bright colours, as I have above.  Just choose colours you love and work them together in unusual ways.  For example, try a whole column of one colour, or work a look in tonal shades from the same family, or, if you're feeling especially bold, in a mix of unexpected combinations.

2. Jewellery and Accessories

Since necklaces, earrings and scarves are right beside your face, they're more likely to be noticed when you're seated at a desk or doing deals over the boardroom table.  These vibrant, textured pieces by Adrienn Pesti are utterly unforgettable - like sea anemones, they catch the eye and hold attention.  Ideal!

3. Shoes, shoes, shoes!

In my experience, wearing fabulous shoes is a sure-fire way to be memorable!  Choose from super-modern styles, like flatforms with your business suit, bright, coloured heels or pretty, embellished options.

From clothes to jewellery, accessories and shoes, nowadays there are so many quality pieces on the high street that you don't even need to spend a fortune to look different... and unforgettable!
