How to Style a Bodycon Dress for Daytime

In association with Isabella’s Wardrobe, Glasgow.

One of the things I love about long-sleeved, bodycon dresses, is their versatility. The sleeves allow you to wear it with or without a coat, depending on the season (with no need to fake tan!); the stretch is super-comfortable; and the style - being both sexy and sporty - lends itself to being dressed up or down, depending on your mood, or the occasion.

Add to the mix a pretty, dark floral print with options to pick out bright colours for daywear, or darks for nighttime, and you’ve got yourself an all-rounder that will see you through season after season. If you read my New Year’s Eve post, you’ll have seen how I styled this Christopher Kane bodycon dress for a night out. But I also promised to show you how it could be styled for daytime - so here goes!

~ Style Notes ~

Tying your hair up in a messy topknot is not only a cool, daytime option, but it’s also great when you’re between blow-dries and you have an early start and a packed schedule!

Leave delicate jewellery at home for after-dark date nights in flesh-baring dresses. Instead, for daywear, go BIG with a bold statement like this Marni geometric piece.

The geo design contrasts with the floral print, while the colour palette remains tonal and pulls out the yellows and earth tones in the dress.

After selecting the yellow-toned statement necklace, I’ve built on that palette by adding this eye-popping lemon, mini C de Cartier crossbody bag. Of course this can also be worn as a top-handle bag (very on-trend right now) or draped over the wrist so as not to interfere with the necklace.

Given the season, I’ve then added more earthy tones in the form of this (now classic) teddy coat. Although it’s not the typical pairing for bright yellow, the print of the dress, containing yellows and browns, pulls the look together, while remaining eye-catching and unique.

Adding the bright red over-the-knee boots may be a step too far for some, but for me, this plays the primaries nicely against the muted earth tones and crimsons in the coat and dress. Be brave, be unique and be unforgettable! Life’s too short to wear boring clothes! Of course, if this is simply too much, a brown or black ankle boot and handbag would tone everything down and still work brilliantly with the dress.

For those of you who’re still shivering in winter’s icy grasp, I’ve linked a couple of rust-coloured faux fur teddy coats. But I’ve also found a couple of lighter, new season coats, for those who’ve finished their winter shopping and in the hope, of course, that spring is round the corner!
